The Global Financial Centres Index 2012 confirmed that Glasgow is now in the Top 15 European Financial Centres (ranked 14th) and that the city is in the top 40 of the world’s top 75 financial centres.
Today, the city has around 50,000 people employed in financial services, IT and business services.
The Financial and Business Services work stream recommends the following action to support the growth and future success of the sector:
- Developing IFSD Phase II: The original IFSD project has been a great success for the sector and for Glasgow and it is an extremely strong platform upon which to build further success and address concerns over supply of Grade A office space. For further information on Glasgow’s International Financial Services District visit http://www.ifsdglasgow.co.uk
- People and Skills: Opportunities to help grow Glasgow’s skilled labour supply – a strong selling point for the city. Key positives for Glasgow are: its existing skills base and the functions currently delivered from the city, its skills pipeline/ market (from school, college and university), its work-readiness and the workforce’s strong work ethic. These could be enhanced by developing a clear demand statement to inform a skills development strategy and the development of an ‘internship programme’.
