Leader, Glasgow City Council

Gordon joined Glasgow City Council in May 1999, as the elected Councillor representing Merchant City ward. During his first term, he was the Council’s spokesperson on Community Councils.

He also developed a keen interest in the work of Cultural and Leisure Services, serving on the committee and joining both the board of Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

After re-election in May 2003, Gordon Matheson was appointed a Bailie of the City and a Justice of the Peace. He was also appointed convener of Central Area Committee, and a member of Strathclyde Joint Police Board.

In 2007, Councillor Matheson was re-elected for a third consecutive term. He was appointed Executive Member for Education and Social Renewal, and joined the Court of University of Strathclyde. In 2009, he was appointed City Treasurer. He was elected Leader of the Council on 10 May 2010.

Councillor Matheson is a graduate of both Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities, is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. In his ‘spare’ time, Councillor Matheson lists attending theatre and eating-out with friends among his hobbies.

He has successfully completed both the Great Scottish Run and the New York Marathon. Councillor Matheson is the Chair of the Glasgow Economic Partnership.
